In April, a group of 5 Michigan State University students traveled to Golden, Colorado to present their research in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Competition. The Solar Decathlon is a worldwide collegiate competition where students are faced with global sustainability issues and work to design energy efficient residences, work places, schools, and more that will appeal to their intended market.
This year, 45 finalist teams presented their designs at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, one team of which was from Michigan State University. The Go Green Team at MSU included Erika Dudley, junior marketing major, Connor Ince, junior environmental and geosciences major, Erin Keller, junior biosystems engineering major, Allison Schmuecker, junior marketing major, and Alex Schultz, junior civil engineering major.
The team designed a net zero suburban single-family home in Okemos, Michigan through energy efficient appliances, proper exterior seals, smart water consumption, renewable solar energy, and more.
The students reached out to Michigan Solar Solutions for solar energy insights and other ways to conserve energy usage. We were able to provide the team with solar suggestions such as the number of panels to install and cost estimates, as well as providing other energy saving tips including light bulb usage, insulation, and more.
“The competition was extremely rewarding, we really had to push ourselves out of our comfort zones to accomplish the task at hand and we’re very thankful that a local company like Michigan Solar Solutions was willing to support us and provide us with product information and quotes to enhance the success of our design!” said team captain, Erin Keller.
